During the holidays my mom and I went to volunteer for a few days at the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary in Prince Albert in the Karoo.

Working with the donkeys and horses was hard work, but it was also fun.  One baby donkey – Tinkerbell, thought I was her play thing and just wanted to play and cuddle all the time. If I was working somewhere else and she woke up – she would nay for me and would not stop until I arrived to play.

The trip to Prince Albert was 391 km’s away from Cape Town and we drove on the N1. We also went through the tunnel and it cost R39.50. It takes 5 minutes to drive through the tunnel.

Prince Albert is a very small town – in fact its so small that the main road is only 1km long.  The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary is just a short way out of town. The have many donkeys and horses that have been rescued from either the slaughter house or from very horrid conditions where they were so badly treated.

At the sanctuary they are loved and fed and all their needs are taken care of.  We de-wormed all the donkeys and cattle on the farm. That was hard word, but I learnt how to pull the medication into the syringe and get it all ready for the nurse to inject into the animals.

It costs about R250 000 a month to look after all the animals and they always need money to help them. If you can please can you support them – every bit helps AND they have such a cool and easy payment option – check it out HERE
